Scholarships

NCCI - The Coal Institute is proud of its commitment to participating in opportunities that promote the utilization of coal and the education of future employees in our industry. Some of those programs we participate in include:

  • CEDAR (Coal Education Development and Resource Council) - Currently four chapters that offer various coal industry educational programs at the elementary, junior high, and high school levels in eastern Kentucky, western Kentucky, southwestern Virginia, and southern West Virginia.
  • Virginia Tech Teacher recertification program - An alternative course in Coal Education offered to secondary school teachers in Virginia to maintain their teaching certification.
  • NCCI Scholarship Program - NCCI - The Coal Institute Scholarship program now offers five $2,500 scholarships and two $5,000 scholarships yearly to various colleges (description below)

NCCI - The Coal Institute Scholarship Program was initiated in 1998. The purpose behind the program is to offer assistance to students who are studying to receive an education and degree in various fields associated with the coal industry. Awards are now granted to two-year colleges with Mining Technology or Mining Engineering programs and awards to four-year colleges offering Mining Engineering degrees. To date, the Institute has distributed over $70,000 toward these scholarships.

Schools which have previously received scholarship money include the following:

  • West Virginia University – Department of Mining Engineering
  • University of Kentucky – Department of Mining Engineering
  • Virginia Tech – Department of Mining Engineering
  • University of Missouri – Rolla – Department of Mining Engineering
  • University of Tennessee – Department of Transportation and Logistics

During 2006-2007, in addition to the two $5,000 scholarships to four year institutions, five $3,500 scholarships were awarded to two-year colleges. The schools receiving scholarships this year are:

  • Bluefield State College – Mining Technology    ($3,500)
  • Big Sandy Community & Technical College – Mining Technology     ($3,500)
  • Hazard Community & Technical College – Mining Technology    ($3,500)
  • Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus – Mining Engineering    ($3,500)
  • Southwest Virginia Community College – Mining Technology    ($3,500)
  • University of Kentucky – Department of Mining Engineering    ($5,000)
  • West Virginia University – Department of Mining Engineering    ($5,000)

Donations to CEDAR for 2006-2007 are:

  • East Kentucky    ($15,000)
  • Southwest Virginia     ($5,000)
  • Southern West Virginia     ($5,000)
  • West Kentucky Cedar     ($5,000)
